Tania Maria Dias Fernandes has a bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1976); a master’s in Public Health from the National Public Health School at Fiocruz (1991); and a PhD in Social History from the Universidade de São Paulo (2001). She did postdoctoral studies at the Graduate Program in Urbanism at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (2011-2012). She holds a CNPq Research Fellowship, level 2. She is a researcher with the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz Research Department and professor with PPGHCS. She has served on the board of the Brazilian Association of Oral History (ABHO) on several occasions since 1996, her most recent term being from 2010 through 2012. Her research and teaching interests include the history of the sciences, health, disease, and public policy, specifically: smallpox and the smallpox vaccine; disease eradication; scientific knowledge; health surveillance; and urban history and the history of favelas, with a focus on post-1950 and government programs in the realm of health and housing. She has been working with oral history and concepts related to memory as methodological support for studies on contemporary history.
